September 16th Session Meeting Highlights
- We received a letter from Presbytery of the Cascades informing us that on September 4, 2014, the Board of Trustees approved our request for an easement to the City of Woodburn for our mural on the south side of the church building. The easement has been sent to Marion County for recording. (The mural was then installed on Saturday, September 20.)
- A letter was received from Legacy Hospice McMinnville seeking volunteers to work in our community.
- We received a letter from Bethany Presbyterian Church regarding a Stephen Ministry Introductory Workshop on Saturday, September 27.
- A letter was received from Love INC thanking us for help in their auction/dinner fund raiser, with special thanks to Kim Johnston for publicity.
- We received a letter from Rollin Chase requesting that we use our church van to transport him and 6 ladies to the Auditorium in Canby to hear four 7:30 p.m. community concerts—October to May—he has been their driver but can no longer do it at age 93. Joanne Hanson will look into this as a possible social activity for our members as well as a mission activity.
- The lease, signed by all tenant parties has now been received from Iglesia Puerto del Cielo. A copy has been sent to the Presbytery office for review by the board of trustees.
- Joanne reviewed the policy and procedure on sexual misconduct and recommended that the document remain as revised last year. A motion was passed to approve it in its present from. The policy is now on file in the office.
- A motion was passed authorizing Laura to order Year B of Feasting on the Word. She uses this resource for the parts of service (call to worship, prayers, confession) when they aren’t provided by the pulpit supply person (most weeks). We have this book for year A and year C, but not year B. Year B begins at the beginning of Advent, November 30th, 2014.
- August income was $9,907 and expenses were $6,606. The difference was $3,301, and will be used to pay back loans from dedicated accounts.
- The last group garden harvest was on Monday Sept 8th.The homeless are no longer present on our property. Thank you to Lucien and Walt for cleaning up their camp down by the labyrinth. There is still a lot of garbage around the front of the garden and around the perimeter including booze bottles. We need volunteers to do a clean-up
- Three minutes for mission given by various members of the congregation are scheduled for Sunday September 21st, 28th, and concluding on World Day of Prayer, October 5th. Woodburn First Presbyterian has the option of deciding the recipient of 25% of the offering collected. A motion was passed to give the 25% to the food bank.
- Regarding the sanctuary sound system; pulpit supply pastors who use the lapel microphone must turn it facing up and not wear it horizontal.
- A church garage sale was held Saturday, September 13th. We raised over $300.00. Proceeds from the sale are going to church general expenses. Thanks to Kim and others for setting up on Friday. Thanks to Kim, Walt, Fran, Johanna, McKenzie, Joanne, Charley, and Sally for helping on Saturday, with an extra thank you to Walt for bringing his truck. FYI –after moving a box of pillows out of the garage to the parking area, a mouse jumped out of the box and ran circles around the parking lot before running into the garage under the lawn mower. So the moral of the story is – there is a mouse (probably more than one) in the garage who has good taste in pillows.
- Church picnic – we have scheduled a church picnic for Sunday, September 28th. The committee will provide hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, beverages, etc. —- asking that others bring salads or desserts. We hope that the weather will be nice to BBQ but we will eat inside.
- First Sunday meals were held every first Sunday all year long and will continue. During the summer we had salads and during the rest of the year we have soup. There are two groups that take alternating months to provide food. Thanks to all who help with this.
- Fair traded coffee and chocolate products are for sale on the carts. Sales have been slow during the summer but hopefully will pick up during the fall. Proceeds from the sale of these items help pay for the fair traded coffee we purchase and serve every Sunday during the fellowship time.
- Session signed a thank you card to send to Christopher Hanson for all the help and work he has provided and done and continues to do for our website.
- Johanna is visiting and offering caring support to Walter Koval, Evelyn Balough, Norbert Krausche, and Evelyn White.
- Johanna and Nancy Hankins are seeking a volunteer to work with the young people in activities and Sunday school. Sarah Schoen has volunteered and is presently teaching Sunday school. Supplies are needed.
- Communion was served to 43 people on September 7, 2014.
- Session discussed the merits of lawn or plantings on the south side of the church, with no final decision.
- The next meeting will be October 21, 2014 at 5:30 p.m
